Event: 2021 Cummins-sponsored colloquium, “The Voice of the Shepherd: Conversations about the Church in Dialogue with America Society”.
The second Cummins Institute-sponsored panel discussion will take place on Saturday, April 17, 2021, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. The topic is "The Catholic Church and the Role of Women in Church Leadership," which will complement the SMC spring celebration of 50 Years of Women at Saint Mary’s. We are taking our cue from Pope Francis, in his recent encyclical on integral human development and solidarity, "The organization of societies worldwide is still far from reflecting clearly that women possess the same dignity and identical rights as men" (Fratelli Tutti, paragraph 23). The reference in our series title to "The Voice of the Shepherd," is meant to include the voices of all gathered in conversation, in the knowledge that Christ speaks through the church as a whole.
The panelists for this conversation (listed below) will be joined by three students, who will offer responses to the presentations. The speakers will then take questions from the audience. President James Donahue will moderate the event.
Bishop Michael C. Barber, S.J., Bishop of Oakland
Sister Barbara Reid, O.P., President of the Catholic Theological Union of Chicago
Professor C. Vanessa White, Associate Professor of Spirituality and Minitry at the CTU
