The CWGE is located on the Ground Level of Augustine Hall. Due to the pandemic, we have virtual office hours on Monday, Wednesday, Friday 1pm-5pm & Tuesday and Thursday 9am-12 (noon). We also invite you to join our weekly programs virtually, and stay updated for more events via our social media!


Sharon Sobotta, M.S.

Director of the Center for Women & Gender Equity

Sharon K. Sobotta is an advocate, a writer, a journalist, a mom and a doula. She has dedicated her professional career to advocating for gender and racial equity, inclusion and diversity while amplifying the voices of marginalized populations. In addition to directing the Center for Women & Gender Equity, Sharon reports on issues ranging from the impact of the pandemic on prison populations, education and voting access to the impacts of racial and gender injustice on Pacifica KPFA. 

Sharon has an MFA in screenwriting from Augsburg University in Minneapolis, an MS in social responsibility from Saint Cloud State University and is a candidate to receive her MFA in non-fiction writing from Saint Mary's College of California. Sharon aspires to bring the complexities of gender as it intersects with other aspects of our identities to the forefront to life on the page to move and open hearts and minds to new levels of nuanced understandings of intersectionality. or 925-631-4171



Wanda Johnson

After losing her son, Oscar Grant at the hands of BART Police Officer Johanes Mehserlee in 2009, Wanda Johnson dedicated her life to advocating for a more just world that is free of racism, racial profiling and police brutality. This year Wanda Johnson is the social justice practitioner in residence for the Center for Women & Gender  Equity. She will lead and facilitate monthly workshops on how to effectively make our voices be heard in our quest for a world that is free of racism, sexism and oppression.

Giselle Espinola-Jimenez, Student Support Specialist and Social Media Specialist

Hi, I’m Gigi! I am a philosophy major with a minor in Law & Society. I am from Monterey, CA and I'm hoping to stay in the Bay Area for law school next year. I love documenting my life through pictures and videos. You can find me at CWGE events with a camera in hand so make sure to smile if you see me! My other affiliations on campus include the High Potential program, APASA, Hermanas, and I am a Study Abroad Peer Mentor! I am excited to finish my senior year strong and meet new people with similar passions for social justice and inclusivity. I look forward to sharing my experiences through my work and involvement at the Center for Women & Gender Equity!






Maya Patel, Student Support Specialist

Hello. My name is Maya and I am a Junior at SMC. I grew up in Oakland, reside in South San Francisco. My intended majors are Business Marketing and Justice, Community, and Leadership. Aside from working at the Center for Women and Gender Equity (CWGE) and the Campus Assault Response and Education (CARE) Center, I am the Chair for the Class of 2022, an on-campus Resident Advisor, a part of the High Potential Program, Founder and President of the Southern Asian Society, and Co-Founder of the Youth Advisory Board for the City of South San Francisco. I enjoy learning from new experiences and look forward to meeting and interacting with people through my various activities. I hope to make the Saint Mary's Community a more inclusive one and a community in which everyone is proud to be a part of.




Mayson Lord, Student Support Specialist

Hiya, I'm Mayson! I'm a senior at SMC; I'm an English major w/ a Creative Writing emphasis and WAGS minor. I use she/her pronouns and I'm from Orangevale, CA! This is my fourth year working for the CWGE and CARE center. I'm very thankful for all the opportunities and connections I've made with the Center and hope to continue doing the best I can for my final year here! I design a lot of the advertisement posters and head the Wednesday Coffee, Creativity, and Community events. Alongside working for the Center, I am also Co-President of PRIDE and a design editor for the Collegian. 





Kulia Osborne, Student Support Specialist

Hello, my name is Kulia and I'm a junior at Saint Mary's College of California. My pronouns are she/her/hers. I'm from Monterey. Alongside working at CWGE, I am the community outreach and recruiting officer for SCAAR, Vice president of the Black Student Union, Student chair and student rep of Black lives Matter committee, and an on-campus Resident Advisor. I'm excited to meet different groups of people and also be a resource for anyone who needs support.






Lucy Wetherall, Community Engagement Student

Hello! I'm Lucy, a clinical psychology major and women's and gender studies minor. I'm a junior here at SMC, and transferred last year. I'm really excited to be volunteering with the CWGE as part of my community engagement class, and can't wait to get started! In my spare time I love to read, have tea parties, and play with my dogs!







Kailee Musgrove, Community Engagement Student

Hello I'm Kailee! I'm currently a senior at Saint Mary's majoring in Clinical Psychology. I grew up in Napa California and just transferred to SMC in the Fall of 2019. I've worked as a lifeguard and special needs swim instructor since I was 16 and more recently as an aquatic therapist. This is my first year working at the CWGE and I'm really excited to work the the community here at Saint Mary's. I attended many of the CWGE events in my first semester at SMC and I'm looking forward to planning some of these events myself. I can't wait to explore what experiences the CWGE has to offer and work on planning some fun events.







Aliya Patel, Student Volunteer

Hello! My name is Aliya Patel and I am a senior at Saint Mary's studying Biology. I am hoping to continue on to grad school for environmental health/epidemiology with a focus on maternal health! I am currently also the Senior Intern for Engaged Learning Facilitation at CILSA! I am a volunteer for the Women and Gender Equity Center and I'm hoping to work on projects focusing on gender, and racial justice!
