Anthony Garrison-Engbrecht, PhD, Vice President for Student Life

Anthony Garrison-Engbrecht brings a wealth of experience from several California institutions, including his most recent position at UC Merced as the Senior Advisor and Chief of Staff for the Division of Student Affairs. He was a key strategist on matters of long-term and strategic planning, resource allocation, personnel matters, divisional processes, and policy.

“Anthony is an exciting hire for our college community and will be vital in restoring energy to our campus,” Plumb said. “He has been successful leading student life programming at several universities and we look forward to his effort at Saint Mary’s.”

Prior to UC Merced, Anthony served as Assistant Dean of Students and Director of the LEAD Center (Student Activities) at the University of California, Berkeley and the Director of Leadership Programs and LGBT Student Services at Loyola Marymount University.

“I am incredibly honored for the opportunity to join Saint Mary’s College at this pivotal time in its history,” Garrison-Engbrecht said. “My meetings with members of the SMC community illuminated the passion around and dedication to developing holistic experiences for students. I am eager to arrive on campus this fall and collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and the broader community to enliven the campus through a renewed commitment to student life. Together, we will advance the SMC mission and create transformative, community-minded experiences.”

Garrison-Engbrecht is committed to Catholic higher education. He is a graduate of Loyola University New Orleans and has earned graduate degrees in curriculum theory, educational psychology, and theology from Chapman University, Pepperdine University, and Loyola Marymount University. His research is focused on educational equity and access with an emphasis on student success.
