MORAGA, Calif. – The initial phase of the Student Athlete Performance Complex has officially begun on the Saint Mary’s College of California campus, kicking off with renovations to McKeon Pavilion.

The work involved in Phase One will benefit student-athletes and fans of the Gaels. Over the next three and a half months, McKeon Pavilion will see upgrades to the fan experience as well as life safety improvements.

“This past week has been a monumental step forward for the Saint Mary’s Athletic Department,” Director of Athletics Mike Matoso said. “To begin renovations to McKeon Pavilion is something this community and fan base has been looking forward to for years. This is the start of many positive moves towards building the complete Student Athlete Performance Complex. Once again, thank you to all of the donors and season ticket holders that have made this project a reality.”

The fan experience upgrades include the installation of a new state-of-the-art Daktronics video board, spanning 48-feet wide on the east side of the building. A new Daktronics sound-system is also being installed to help enhance the sound quality inside the pavilion, including the lobby and restrooms. A new Musco lighting system, floor and branding will be the final touches inside the pavilion in August.

One of the initial steps underway is the seismic retrofitting of the 40-year-old pavilion, including four exterior buttresses. In the coming weeks, a new roof and fire sprinklers will be installed throughout the pavilion. Also underway in the lobby is the addition of ADA restrooms.

The first month has seen the removal of old equipment in and around the pavilion, including scoreboards, sound system, temporary office trailers and the demolition of concrete.

Saint Mary’s has entrusted the work of Cahill Contractors as the general contractor of the project. Cahill Contractors has been a Bay Area staple, dating back to 1911.

Phase One is scheduled to be completed in August of 2018, kicking off the fall athletic season with volleyball competitions in the renovated pavilion.
