SEBA Students Win Annual Competition

A team of School of Economics and Business Administration (SEBA) students has won the 2021 Northern California CFA Institute Research Challenge, an annual global competition that provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis and professional ethics. The students will move on to the sub-regional event for the Western United States.

Working in teams, students gain real-world experience as they assume the role of research analysts and are judged on their ability to value a stock, write a research report, and present their recommendations. The SEBA students analyzed and made a buy/sell/hold recommendation for First Republic Bank. They were judged by a panel of industry professionals and CFA charter holders. The team began crafting their written report in December 2020 and worked almost every day during January. They also prepared for their oral presentation, practicing in front of their mentor and finance classes.

The winning team consists of: Miguel Bowden ’21, Emily Mosler ’21, Jack Callan ’21, James Person ’22, and Andrew Guillen ’22. They were mentored by industry executive Stephen Parlett, and their faculty advisor was Saint Mary’s Professor Tee Lim, MBA, PhD.

The team is looking forward to being awarded the trophy and gifts from First Republic Bank. They will next submit a recorded presentation to the sub-regional event by March 19.

Congratulations to our students!
