Student Research

Saint Mary’s College believes that faculty-guided student research is an important part of a comprehensive approach to science education for many reasons. First, because it provides an opportunity for individualized learning through focused, in-depth exploration of a topic. Second, research skills are essential background for decision-making in the private and public sectors and are required of anyone pursuing advanced studies in the sciences. And finally, student/faculty research provides an opportunity for collaborative thinking and a shared process as students and professors join forces to tackle a common problem using science learned in the classroom. For faculty, research opportunities provide opportunities for professional growth, lead to innovation and discovery, and support the pursuit of academic excellence. Saint Mary’s offers science research opportunities both during the summer and throughout the academic year.

Saint Mary’s aims to invest in both annual and endowed research funds over the next couple of years in order to increase significantly the total number of students able to participate in this program.

·      With a minimum gift/pledge of $100,000: donors can create a restricted, named endowed SOS Student Research fund, which would guarantee funding of approximately $5,000 each year in perpetuity to support this unique scholarly research program. This gift could be pledged over 3-5 years and would generate income once the fund reaches $100,000.

·      With a minimum annual gift of $10,000—or increments of $10,000: donors can sponsor one or more students’ participation in SOS student research opportunities.
