International Catholic Weekly "The Tablet" Reviews David Alvarez's New Book on Vatican Military

The international Catholic Weekly News outlet "The Tablet" recently reviewed Politics Professor David Alvarez's new book, "The Pope's Soldiers." Alvarez is an expert on government intelligence agencies and the history of Vatican espionage. His previous books include "Spies in the Vatican: Espionage and Intrigue from Napoleon to the Holocaust," "Secret Messages: Codebreaking and American Diplomacy," and "Nothing Sacred: Nazi Espionage against the Vatican." "The Pope's Soldiers," his latest work, explores the military history of the papal authority.

The United Kingdom-based Tablet says Alvarez rescues "pontifical forces from the near oblivion to which many historians of nineteenth-century Italy consign them." The Tablet review goes on to recommend the work to Vatican scholars and "to anyone with more than a passing interest in the story of the papacy."
