Institutional Review Board

The purpose of the Institutional Review Board is to protect the rights and welfare of research participants.

The Board has seven regular members with at least one member in a non-science field:

  • One member from the School of Science
  • Two members from the School of Education
  • Two member from the School of Liberal Arts
  • One member external to SMC
  • One ex-officio member, the Director of Institutional Research

The Review Process:

  1. Submit the application and supplemental documents in appendices.
  2. The Board reviews each application submitted before each deadline.
  3. The Board makes a consensus decision (i.e., approval, provisional approval, revision, or deny) and notifies the applicant in writing.
  4.  If a revision is requested, the applicant submits a revision with a description of how each revision request is reflected in the appropriate document. Once the Board receives the revision, a decision will be made and notified to the applicant.
