The purpose of the Institutional Review Board is to protect the rights and welfare of research participants. 

Saint Mary’s College of California is committed to the generation of knowledge and the pursuit of justice. The SMC Institutional Review Board (IRB) is mandated by Federal regulations to protect the rights and welfare of all human participants recruited for research activities by SMC faculty, staff and students. The IRB has the authority to approve, require modification, or disapprove all SMC human subject research.

The IRB is composed of interdisciplinary faculty and community members who have received training and certification to evaluate research; its function is to support the College’s research and scholarly endeavors while simultaneously striving to protect human participants.
