Graduate Student Spotlight: Jay Callis MA '19

Jay Callis After graduating from California State University, Chico with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, Jay Callis MA ‘19 made the decision to join the Saint Mary’s College Graduate Kinesiology program to get him to the next level of his career path.

“The accelerated program and the opportunities of creating connections is what made me choose the Graduate Kinesiology program at Saint Mary’s.”

In addition to taking courses such as Philosophical Basis of Kinesiology and Supervision & Legal Aspects, Jay balanced his studies with a sales position at Orangetherory Fitness, as well as serving as a Graduate Student Coordinator for SMC Campus Recreation. His hard work definitely paid off, as Jay was promoted to Assistant Director of Recreation Operations, where he currently oversees staff, on and off campus facility reservations, and day-to-day operations.

“The administrative and legal knowledge I have gained from the Grad Kines Program has helped me immensely in my current position with Campus Recreation.” Jay’s advice to current students is: “Take your time and don't rush through assignments, as you will someday apply what is being learned (in the program) in your career.”

Jay hopes to continuing working within operations and recreation and strives to continue to climb the administrative ladder within the field.
