Dear Members of the Saint Mary’s College Community

I am delighted to announce that this year we have a very special Academic Convocation, honoring two contributors to our mission, Mr. Kevin Nagle and Brother James Gaffney, FSC. We will also honor one faculty person and one staff person as Outstanding Lasallian Educators. This year’s Convocation is Wednesday, April 21, 1 - 2:30pm, in a virtual format. Click this link for registration:

The Convocation is a key moment in our academic year, especially this year as we celebrate the many achievements of our community during this unprecedented time of the Coronavirus pandemic. Convocation also occurs during our annual De La Salle Heritage Days. This year’s theme is “Great Things Are Possible: Together in Faith, Service, and Community.” Each year’s Convocation is a special event and this year will be no exception.

Brother James is being recognized for his exemplary lifelong leadership and service as a Lasallian educator. Brother James was president of Lewis University for 28 years, leading substantial growth and transformation. A trustee for Saint Mary’s for two terms, Br. James continues to be an active advocate for Catholic higher education nationally as well as engaged in multiple community development projects in the Chicago area to support students of all backgrounds.

Mr. Kevin Nagle serves as Chairperson of the Board of Trustees here at Saint Mary’s and has helped lead Saint Mary’s key initiatives in advancement, strategic planning, reorganization, and physical and fiscal development. In addition to his extraordinary service to Saint Mary’s, he is a nationally known entrepreneur and philanthropist, helping to develop the larger Sacramento area. He has received numerous awards for his vision and follow through linking technology, healthcare, and real estate industry, education, athletics, and community support.

I am delighted that both Brother James and Mr. Kevin Nagle will receive an honorary degree, “Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership honoris causa,” and address the Saint Mary’s community. Convocation is a time for us to pause, come together, reflect and celebrate our shared mission and this year will be a very special celebration for our community.
