FREE, Contributions will help offset expenses for the Choir Tour to Puerto Rico May 23-29, 2022
All are invited to take in a feast for the ears and the soul as the SMC choral students share their love of music-making. Featured compositions include African-American Spirituals, Go Down in the Valley ‘n Pray and I Sing Because I’m Happy, by two masters in the genre, André Thomas and Rollo Dilworth. Other program highlights include Rosephanye Powell’s To Sit and Dream with text based on Langston Hughes’ To You, and No Time, arranged by American Folksong expert, Susan Brumfield. For our May 23-29 choir tour to Puerto Rico, we have prepared a rendition of El Cumbanchero by Puerto Rican composer Rafaél Hernandez, as well as numerous arrangements by Bay Area’s Greg Murai, including Earth Wind and Fire’s Fantasy, EWF’s version of Lennon/McCarthy’s Got to Get You into My Life, Duke Ellington’s Come Sunday, and Pure Imagination from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Our sets will also include music by Hugo Alfvén, Z. Randall Stroope, Jere Hutcheson, Clean Bandit, plus a rousing Mervyn Warren arrangement of Beethoven’s Joyful, Joyful featured in the film Sister Act II. The concert has free admission: we will gladly accept contributions to offset our tour expenses, but will be most deeply rewarded by your presence.
