Hiring an International Student

Hiring an International Student
Body

Working on campus enhances the experience of our international and exchange students!

On-Campus Employment

All F-1 international and J-1 exchange students are legally allowed to work on campus.  Working on campus is a great way for our international students to interact with the SMC community and earn extra income to support themselves while in the U.S.

Fast Facts about Hiring International Students for On-Campus Positions

  • F-1 and J-1 students can work a maximum of 20 hours per week while classes are in session, but can work 20+ hours per week during breaks
  • J-1 students MUST have work authorization from the Center for International Programs before beginning work on campus
  • International students will likely need to apply for a Social Security Number, so they will need a signed job offer letter from their hiring manager and a letter of support from the Center for International Programs
  • Encourage the student to contact the Center for International Programs before applying for a Social Security Number
