Brother Cornelius Visual Art Scholarship

Awards of $13,000 per year awarded to entering first-time freshmen for each of four years of consecutive full-time study.

Application opens in October for applicants for the Fall Term. The deadline for all submissions is November 15.

Scholarship Application Requirements:

• In less than 500 words, describe your interest and qualifications for the scholarship (including AP courses). We know you love making, looking at, and studying art so there is no need to use up your 500 words telling us! We are more interested in what motivates you about art to the degree that you would choose it as a major field of study.
• Two (2) letters of recommendation from teachers and/or others addressing the applicant’s qualifications

For Art Practice applicants only:

• A public or private online portfolio of original artwork (artwork in digital or traditional mediums or video).
• At least 5 but no more than 10 artworks for each submission. Please include a written list that corresponds to each artwork in your portfolio with Title, Medium, Size, Duration (if video/audio), and a short description of each artwork including information about your concepts and materials.

Skills:

NOTE: There are no requirements for skills at all - that will not affect your candidacy. We are simply interested in your areas of expertise, interest, and experience. 

• A list of software skills such as Adobe Creative Cloud or other software and/or,
• Any experience with studio art skills such as drawing, painting, mixed-media, sculpture, video/filmmaking, animation, photography, digital art, or installation art.

Additional Information:

• These are merit scholarships awarded on determinations of academic and competitive ability, not financial need.
• All scholarships are applied against any demonstrated need first (as determined by the FAFSA) they cannot be “stacked” atop need-based Saint Mary’s scholarships once a financial aid offer has been mailed.
• Recipients must remain enrolled full-time, maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0, and must major in the respective departments to maintain their departmental scholarships.
• These departmental scholarships may be stacked with other merit scholarships, namely the Gael’s Scholar’s Award, Lasallian Leadership Award, Honors-at-Entrance Scholarship, and the Presidential Scholarship. However, an individual may receive no more than three of these merit-based institutional scholarships. The maximum amount of gift aid that a student can receive, including Pell and Cal Grants, is the cost of tuition.
• All scholarships are renewable for three successive years of consecutive full-time study provided eligibility requirements and obligations are met.

Expectations:

The recipient must major in Art Practice or Art History and is expected to annually contribute in several capacities to the Art + Art History Department. Such contributions may include working closely with a faculty member as a production or research assistant on a visual art project, coordinating student exhibits, and leading the department’s art club.
