Annual Scholars Reception Celebrates Faculty Achievement

On Friday, March 19, the Saint Mary’s College virtual Zoom room was full of joy and good cheer as faculty members were celebrated at the College’s Annual Scholars Reception.

Kathy Littles, associate provost for inclusive excellence and senior diversity officer welcomed the attendees. “We are here to celebrate the quality, impact, and extent of faculty research, scholarship and creative activity. Faculty scholarship makes Saint Mary’s a vibrant intellectual hub, a repository of culture, and a fun and exciting place to learn.”

Throughout the event, the chat room was full of congratulatory remarks among faculty and colleagues, who cheered for one another as each category awardee was individually recognized with a full-screen visual and description of their scholarly work.

Megan Mustain, acting chief academic officer took to the virtual stage to introduce the sabbatical and provost grant awardees. “I think it’s appropriate to start this celebration by acknowledging our amazing and accomplished Professor of the Year, Rosemary Graham,” stated Mustain. Graham was exalted for being a “brilliant and caring teacher, a highly talented writer, and invaluable contributor to the English department, the College, and the SMC community.” Mustain then announced the category grant awardees, providing in-depth details on their body of work, research, and accomplishments.

Littles reappeared on the virtual screen to announce the winners of the various faculty awards, likewise sharing images and details about each awardee and their outstanding work. As the event drew to a close, Littles enthusiastically commented, “Congratulations to all of our award winners!” She then added, in true Zoom style, “You can use your emojis to clap your hands, or you can continue to be in the chat room to congratulate everyone.” Needless to say, the chat room evolved into its own virtual after party. The only thing missing was the opportunity to give in-person congratulatory hugs. There’s always next year.
