Everybody, a finalist for the 2018 Pulitzer Prize, is a wise and joyful riff on the fifteenth-century morality play Everyman. The action follows Everybody (the lead actor chosen by lottery at each performance) on a journey towards life’s greatest mystery—mortality itself. The Saint Mary’s production will be staged outdoors in the Redwood Grove, timed to unfold from sunset through twilight into darkness.

The production will be directed by guest artist Daniel Larlham, whose past productions at SMC include Dance Nation (2020), The School for Lies (2020), Twelfth Night (2016), and Lysistrata (2016).

The script calls for the actor playing the lead role (“Everybody”) to be determined by lottery each night, a device that speaks to the play’s themes of uncertainty, chance, and the universality of certain basic conditions of human experience (mortality, vulnerability, suffering, love).  There will be three actors cast as “Everybody” in our production.

His plays Neighbors, Appropriate, and An Octoroon form a “trilogy of highly provocative and fantastical explorations of race in America.” Among his many honors: the MacArthur “genius” award, and a finalist for 2018 Pulitzer in Drama. He holds an MA in Performance Studies from NYU, and is also a graduate of the Playwrights Program at the Juilliard School.

EVERYBODY PLOT SUMMARY: God, displeased with humanity’s moral blindness, summons Death to call Everybody to account for how they’ve lived their life. Everybody freaks out when Death comes calling and begs to be allowed to bring along a companion on their journey to the great beyond. Death grudgingly agrees, and Everybody visits, in turn, Friendship, Kinship, Cousin, and Stuff, all of whom rebuff Everybody’s pleas. Eventually, Love arrives and agrees to accompany Everybody on their journey. As Love and Everybody approach the grave, Beauty, Strength, Senses, and Mind desert them, setting the scene for Everybody’s final, poignant confrontation with the raw fact of their mortality.
